Tips for a National Mall Photo Session
As Cherry Blossom season approaches, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning a photo session at the National Mall.
National Park Service Permit
The National Park Service does require a permit for photo sessions at the National Mall. There is a $90 application fee plus a $50 location fee. You can find more about the permits here https://www.nps.gov/linc/planyourvisit/permitsandreservations.htm. If you’re interested in a National Mall photoshoot, I would fill out an application for you.
Lincoln or Jefferson Memorial?
If you’re visiting from out of town, you may not know that the Lincoln and Jefferson are not that close to each other! It’s definitely doable with lots if time, but it is a bit of a walk around the Mall. My biggest tip if you want to do both is to bring a pair of comfy shoes for walking or uber/lyft!
Sunrise of Sunset?
I have examples of both a sunrise and sunset session at the National Mall. The sunrises behind the Washington Moment and sets behind the Lincoln Memorial. If you’re an early riser, I would definitely recommend having your photo session at sunrise. You’re less likely to have a lot of people in your photos which could lead to a more enjoyable experience. I find the National Mall very peaceful at sunrise! If you’re not an early riser and don’t mind having tourist in your photos, then sunset would be perfect timing.
